In 1902, Berry College began as a small rural school located 60 miles north of Atlanta by Martha Berry to educate impoverished children and young adults in the area. Martha’s first program added to the school’s curriculum was the music program, and by 1948 the school’s unofficial motto was “Everybody Sings at Berry.”
In over 200 vintage photographs, author and historian Mary Ellen Pethel captures the school’s dynamic musical past that now gains recognition locally, nationally and internationally.
Pethel hopes the book will “ensure the prominence of music at Berry College, as the school’s founder, Martha Berry, held music in high regard as an integral part of her educational mission.”
