A command performance by alumnus Michael Hendrick (89C) headlined the kickoff celebration for Berry’s alumni centennial.
A renowned tenor who has earned accolades around the world during his 11 years as a full-time performer, Michael returned home May 30 for a special recital at Ford Auditorium. His performance was just one of the highlights during an Alumni Weekend like no other in Berry history.
Accompanying Michael’s recital on the opening day of the celebration was a grand birthday party marking the 100th anniversary of the Berry Alumni Association. Many old friends returned for the occasion, including past recipients of the distinguished alumni awards and former alumni association presidents. Also on hand were the 2008 award recipients: Dr. Joe A. Elder (63C), Distinguished Achievement; Bob Huff (51C), Distinguished Service; Bob Williams (62H), Entrepreneurial Spirit; and Brian Brodrick (97C), Outstanding Young Alumnus.
Approximately 600 people turned out for the weekend extravaganza. Events of note included a jazz reception at Oak Hill, an alumni art show, the traditional golf scramble, a special appreciation luncheon and picnic, and reunions for a host of different class years. Other highlights included a book-signing for One Hundred Years of Service: The Berry Alumni Association 1908-2008, written by Dr. Ouida Dickey (50C, FFS), past president of the Berry Alumni Association; and the presentation of an alumni history exhibit curated by Dr. Jennifer Dickey (77A, 80C). A portrait of the Berry Alumni Association’s first director, the late Walter A. Johnson Sr., also was unveiled.
The centennial celebration continues through January 2009, with special events planned around Mountain Day (Oct 3-5) and Founder’s Day (Jan. 29-31). More details will be posted at www.berry.edu/alumni as they become available.
