ROME — The Berry Alumni Association turns 100 years young and kicks off a yearlong celebration with Alumni Weekend and Alumni Work Week.
More than 500 people are expected for this year’s Alumni Weekend festivities, scheduled for May 30-June 1.
The celebration gets under way Friday, May 30, with a grand birthday party, complete with cake, in the majestic Ford Dining Hall followed by an 8 p.m. recital by alumnus and acclaimed operatic tenor Michael Hendrick in Ford Auditorium (reservation required). Hendrick, a former WinShape student, studied under longtime faculty member Harry Musselwhite during his days as a Berry undergrad. Today, he is one of the world’s most respected tenors with his impressively diverse range of experience in opera and concert.
Hendrick won’t be the only alumnus in the spotlight on the first day of the celebration. Also honored will be past and present winners of Berry’s Distinguished Alumni Awards, as well as the institution’s 10 most senior alumni. A portrait of the association’s first alumni director, the late Walter A. Johnson Sr., will be unveiled as well.
Other highlights of the Alumni Weekend schedule include an art exhibit showcasing Berry College’s collection of alumni work, a jazz reception on the picturesque grounds of Oak Hill and a book-signing by alumna and former faculty member Dr. Ouida Dickey for One Hundred Years of Service: The Berry Alumni Association 1908-2008. Also featured will be an alumni golf scramble, various meet and greet opportunities, and guided tours of the vast campus and its facilities. Reunions are scheduled for the college classes of 1953, 1958, 1963 and 1968; and the high school classes of 1948, 1953, 1958 and 1963.
Many of those who gather for Alumni Weekend will remain on campus for Alumni Work Week, which gets under way Sunday, June 1, and continues through Friday, June 6. Approximately 150 participants are expected to scour the campus and tackle a host of projects as part of this unique Berry tradition. This year’s projects include Oak Hill grounds maintenance, carpentry work, quilting, House o’ Dreams maintenance and roofing repairs to the Emily Cottage breezeway.
