ATONEMENT – In Commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day

Marvin David Levy was one of the United States’ most important composers of the 20th and 21rst centuries. Best known for his opera Mourning Becomes Electra (most recently heard at FGO) he was a multifaceted composer of music for all genres.

Atonement is a Cantata in three movements for chorus, orchestra, narrator, soprano and tenor soloists. Each of the three movements deal with a terrible yet seminal moment in the history of the Jewish people- the Holocaust, the Inquisition and the Masada.

A part of Orchestra Miami’s “Discover Miami Through Music” series, the program begins with a brief talk on the history of Temple Israel by Rabbi M. Thomas Heyn. The famous and frothy Overture to Candide by beloved composer Leonard Bernstein will open the musical program, followed by Atonement. The concert will be presented without intermission and last approximately 90 minutes.
